SWIM MEET COMPETITION

  1. PURPOSE
    1. The purpose of the Swim Meet is to encourage participation by entire Corps rather than a select team. It is hoped that this will help promote "esprit de corps".

  2. SAFETY
    1. Constant awareness with respect to the many hazards present when young people are in the vicinity of water cannot be over-stressed. The responsibility for the safety lies with all Officers of all Corps and not just the Officials.
    2. Fully certified Life Guards must be in attendance. The ratio must be one life guard per 25 cadets or part thereof as per Royal Life Saving Society of Canada (RLSSC) requirements.

  3. GENERAL RULES
    1. Those cadets not participating must remain seated and away from the pool's edge.
    2. Skylarking in and around the pool area will not be tolerated.
    3. Running in and around the pool area will not be tolerated.
    4. The footwear of all Officers and Officials at the pool side must conform to those regulations governing the particular pool facility being used.
    5. A Nominal Roll in duplicate to be prepared. One copy to be handed to the Host Corps Commanding Officer or designated official on arrival, the duplicate to be held by the pool side officer. The Nominal Roll to show the Cadet's name and date of birth only.

  4. PROGRAM
    1. The Swim Meet will be divided into two (2) separate categories:
      1. Individual races
      2. Team relay race.

  5. INDIVIDUAL RACES
    1. This event will be competed by age categories per Corps. There will be only one winner per age group per Corps to compete in the last heat. In the last heat every placement will be awarded points, 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. The Corps with the total highest points will be the winner.
    2. The Cadets will compete in the following categories with the year of birth determining the age category:
      1. Nine (9) years and eight months of age
      2. Nine (9) years and eight months of age
      3. Eleven (11) years of age
      4. Twelve (12) years of age.
      5. Thirteen (13) years of age.
    3. Any and/or all Cadets may be entered in each of their respective age categories.
    4. The procedure for the heats will be as follows:
      1. Each contestant will stand at the pool's end.
      2. The Starting Judge will give the appropriate signal. The Competitors will enter (ease) into the pool, place their backs to the wall and await further instructions.
      3. When the starting signal is given the contestants will swim to the opposite end of the pool using the stroke of their choice.
      4. UNDERWATER SWIMMING IS NOT ALLOWED.
      5. The first contestant to reach and touch the wall at the opposite end of the pool will be declared the winner by the finishing judge.
      6. This procedure will continue until one cadet per age group per corps is found.

  6. TEAM RELAY RACE
    1. The team composition for this event will consist of 4 cadets, one from each age category. (If age quantities not available, a Corps may double up on an age group).

    2. The teams will compete at the same time.

    3. The team will divide themselves into groups of two (2) and position themselves at the opposite ends of the pool facing each other. After the appropriate command from the Starting Judge, the first member will enter the pool, swim to the opposite end and touch the pool wall. The first in line then enter the water and proceed as previously outlined. The individual who has just completed the swim will the go to the rear of the line and sit down. This procedure will be followed by each member in turn.

    4. The first team with all members completed and out of the water will be declared the winner. Second and Third, etc. place will also be declared as their teams become clear of the water.
